1. The Balance of Surprise and Inevitability

A weak ending leaves readers feeling cheated or bored. A masterful ending delivers on what Aristotle called 'anagnorisis'—the sudden discovery that every clue throughout the story was pointing directly to this exact outcome.

Never introduce a brand-new magical device or character in the final 10% to resolve the plot.

2. Resolving the Internal Wounds

Physical battles are secondary. The real climax is when the protagonist chooses their moral Need over their surface Want. Even in bittersweet tragedies, the victory is internal: the character has finally reclaimed their soul.

3. The Power of Bookend Visual Imagery

Echo the opening image of your story in the final scene. If the story began with a character looking out a rain-streaked window from inside a dark house, end with them stepping out through the front door into the rain.

4. Polishing the Unforgettable Final Sentence

The closing sentence should resonate like a struck bell. Keep it rhythmic, poetic, and focused on the changed world left in the wake of the narrative journey.
